What is IMP?
=========
IMP is a set of PHP scripts that implement an IMAP based webmail system. Assuming
you have an account on a server that supports IMAP, you can theoretically use an
installation of IMP to check your mail from anywhere that you have web access.
What does it require?
===============
Absolute requirements: A web server running PHP with imap support (PHP 3.0.6 or
later), a browser that supports cookies, and an IMAP account.
More or less absolute (ie, you'd have to do serious code revision to get by without): A
browser capable of a reasonable level of Javascript and tables.
Highly Recommended: An SSL web server and a browser capable of the same (this
would only require minor code modification to get by without, but still...), and PHP
compiled into the server as a module.
Localization
========
A strong effort has been made to make IMP as non-English-friendly as possible. To that
end, generous users have contributed various language translations for use with IMP.
These are included with the standard IMP distribution.
Czech - Petr Cech <cech@atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz>
Slovak - Juraj Bednar <bednar@isternet.sk>
Slovak - Mino Toth <99cd064@netlab.sk>
Brazilian Portuguese - Antonio Dias <accdias@sst.com.br>
Portuguese - RaTao von J <ratao@globalrede.com>
Spanish - Noe Lugo Rojas <noelugo@ife.org.mx>
Danish - Jette Lyon <jettelyon@post2.tele.dk>
Can I try it?
Sure. If you want to see how it works, choose secure or insecure and enter your server,
username, and password into the form to login.
How do I know the code isn't crap?
========================
You can look at the html source all you want; you can also browse the current source
tree online. CVSWeb lets you go through the source tree and view the current code, as
well as what's changed from version to version.
You can just download the thing and try it on your own server. (see below)
What about distribution? What sort of license does it have?
=========================================
You can grab a tarball via ftp, httpd or one of the other download options. It is under
the GNU Public License (Read the COPYING file). Although the GPL doesn't require it, I'd
appreciate it if you let me know about any changes you make - I more or less wrote it
for WSO/Williams College, and one of the reasons I'm GLP'ing it is of course so that
those using it here can benefit from any other work that is done on it.
