when i use update and the updated value is the same as the previous value
i get 0 affected rows... how can i make sure there is no sql problem with
mysql_affected_rows() if it sometimes returns 0 when the querry was
successfull?

mysql_query() will return 0 if your query failed, and something else in
case it succeeds. So to check for problems, you should do something like:

if (!mysql_query(...)) {
error...
}
