It's easy to count the number of words in a string or block of text
<?php
$myText
= "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog";
$words = explode(' ',$myText);
$wordCount = count($words);

if(
$wordCount > 50) {

// text contained too many words
}
?>

It's not 100% acurate (can be more acurate with a regular expression to account for other forms of
white space, like newlines and tabs) but it's quick!

Alternatively, you can also use the native function str_word_count() (since PHP 4.3.0).
