SUMMARY
=======

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before
you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem
occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry"
Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in
Regedt32.exe.

The Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 command prompts allow for command line
completion extensions by pressing the key. This saves a number of
keystrokes when trying to type long paths or filenames. For instance, typing the
line:

cd c:\pro

and then hitting the key will expand the line to:

cd "c:\Program Files"

If there are multiple possibilities, ie. Using this example, If there was a
Program Files directory and a Professional directory, hitting the TAB key
multiple times would allow a person to switch between them. This behavior is
disabled by default.

MORE INFORMATION
================

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that
problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use
Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and
Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete
Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in
Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If
you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk
(ERD).

To enable this feature, do the following:

To change the setting for the TypeGuessRows value, follow these steps:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor

4. Select CompletionChar and on the Edit menu click Modify.

5. Change the value to 9.

The command prompt will now allow command line completion. No reboot is
necessary.

To restore the default settings, change the value to the default setting of "0"
(without the quotes).
