Introduction

Your production machine might have installed PHP on an Apache server in a Linux environment, but most of the people (like me) will develop and test their code on a Windows machine before they move their work on a production machine.

Working on this assumption in this article I am going to step you through the installation of the PHP interpreter under Microsoft Personal Web Server in windows environment.

So sit back and enjoy!

What is PWS (Personal Web Server)?

PWS has the power to turn any computer running Windows 95 or Windows 98 into a Web server and enables instant publication of Web pages. PWS is very easy to install and maintain. PWS is ideal for low-volume, peer-to-peer web publishing, not to mention testing our PHP code before we move it to the production machine.

A few of the advantages of Personal Web Server are as follows:

Publish Web pages on the Internet or over a LAN on an Intranet by using the HTTP service.
Support Microsoft ActiveX controls.
Transmit or receive files by using the FTP service.
Run Internet Server API (ISAPI) and Common Gateway Interface (CGI) scripts.
Send queries to ODBC data sources by using the Internet Database Connector component (httpodbc.dll).
Support the Secure Sockets Layer
Note: When using Personal Web Server, each computer you want to access the server (and the server itself) must have Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) installed.
