printf("Connect failed: %s\n"mysqli_connect_error());
    exit();
}

/* change character set to utf8 */
if (!$mysqli->set_charset("utf8")) {

printf("Error loading character set utf8: %s\n"$mysqli->error);
} else {

printf("Current character set: %s\n"$mysqli->character_set_name());
}

$mysqli->close();
?>

Example #2 Procedural style

<?php
$link
mysqli_connect('localhost''my_user''my_password''test');

/* check connection */
if (mysqli_connect_errno()) {

printf("Connect failed: %s\n"mysqli_connect_error());
    exit();
}

/* change character set to utf8 */
if (!mysqli_set_charset($link"utf8")) {

printf("Error loading character set utf8: %s\n"mysqli_error($link));
} else {

printf("Current character set: %s\n"mysqli_character_set_name($link));
}

mysqli_close($link);
?>

The above example will output:

 Current character set: utf8
